There’s a reason so many podcasts launch with a bang and quietly fade away after episode six.
It’s not because the host ran out of things to say (though that happens too). It’s usually because the podcast didn’t start with a strategy.
Podcasting is having a moment, and for good reason. It’s one of the fastest ways to build trust, share your expertise, and get your voice in front of the right people (literally). But just because the barrier to entry is lower these days doesn’t mean every brand should hit “record” without a plan.
A good podcast has strategy, story and structure. Let’s break that down.
Why More Brands Are Getting Behind the Mic
Whether you’re a fractional CFO, a food safety consultant, or a founder with something to say, a podcast gives you space to share your point of view without having to compete with clickbait, scroll fatigue, or pay-to-play platforms.
A podcast:
Plus, it’s a great excuse to invite strategic guests into your world and create conversations that matter. But all of that only works if you start with the right foundation.
The Three Pillars of a Strategic Podcast
1. Strategy
What’s the goal of your show? Who’s it for? Why should they listen?
If you can’t answer those questions clearly, pause before you publish. A solid strategy maps your goals (brand awareness, lead gen, thought leadership) to the content you’ll create. It also helps you stay consistent and focused.
2. Story
This is where most podcasts fall apart. Your show needs a story - not just in the content of each episode, but in the way your brand sounds.
Are you the honest expert? The approachable educator? The behind-the-scenes storyteller? Your voice matters just as much as your content. Without a clear voice and narrative, your podcast will blend into the noise.
3. Structure
Structure creates consistency. You need a format (intro, core content, call-to-action), a cadence (weekly? twice a month?), and a promotion plan that gets each episode in front of your audience. Otherwise, it’s a lot of effort for very little return.
You’ve seen what happens without a plan:
→ The expert who started strong but fizzled out after three episodes.
→ The brand that recorded 10 interviews but never promoted them.
→ The solo host who couldn’t figure out how to tie their podcast into their broader marketing.
Don’t be that podcast.
